Transatlantic Cup 2026
August 20-21, 2026 – Formby GC & Formby Ladies GC, United Kingdom
History
The Transatlantic Cup is an international Ryder Cup style golf tournament played between teams from the United States and Great Britain. The inaugural event was played at Pumpkin Ridge GC in Portland, OR in September 2024 and was won by Team USA. The second playing of the competition will be held at Formby GC and Formby Ladies GC in August 2026.
WHAT THE CUP IS
The Transatlantic Cup is a new competitive tournament between friends established in 2024, intended as a way to maintain friendships and camaraderie between all participants. It is an event open to all.
WHAT THE CUP IS NOT
The Transatlantic Cup is NOT a LCSGS event, it is entirely independent of individual golf societies or clubs. Nor is it a continuation of the Cumbria Cup as historically played for by LCS, Telford and East Kilbride. As a result, it is not restricted only to members of LCS, Telford, East Kilbride or Pumpkin Ridge.
Whilst we encourage people to represent their own society/club in spirit, and we want to continue the legacy of competition established with the founding of the Cumbria Cup by Bernie Fleming and Paul Booth, this is an entirely independent competition.
Venue
The 2026 Transatlantic Cup will be played over two days in Formby, on the North West coast of the United Kingdom.
Day One – Thursday 20th August 2026 – Formby GC
Day Two – Friday 21st August 2026 – Formby Ladies GC
Participation
The Transatlantic Cup 2026 is open to all interested participants. If you are interested in this event and want to be kept informed on the progress, then please register using the email mailing list form below. Despite the UK organisers being members of LCSGS, this is not a LCSGS competition, so communications will primarily be via this email mailing list and not LCS email groups. This site will be regularly updated with information and registered participants will also be invited to a WhatsApp group.
Please re-register even if you attended the 2024 event as this is a new mailing list.
We anticipate significant interest in this event and we will have limited numbers for matches. The competition will consist of 4 sessions of 12 v 12 players. Therefore, Team GB will be able to facilitate an absolute maximum of 48 different players. However, we have also secured two additional 4-balls per session, so up to 8 players can play behind the matches.
Selection criteria is yet to be determined, although every effort will be made to make it as inclusive as possible and assure at least one match for participants. Hopefully we can allocate multiple matches to participants, but this will obviously depend on the number of registered participants. Criteria will be published on this site and communicated clearly to all registered participants as early as possible, but certainly BEFORE March 2026. However, selection criteria has to be able to include non-LCSGS members such as Mark Drummond, Anthony Musson and the Telford members who were involved in 2024. It would not be fair to exclude them by only having internal qualifying limited to the LCS society only (again, this is NOT a LCS event either).
We would like to acknowledge the commitment and investment made by those who participated in the inaugural 2024 event, without whom this competition would never have been realised, and our initial preference was to guarantee those participants at least one match in the 2026 event. However, we do not want to unfairly exclude or disadvantage other potential participants, so we will consider this as part of the selection criteria.
Deposits and Donations
The total cost for all four rounds of golf would be ~£400. However, as it is highly unlikely that any one participant will be able to play all four rounds due to demand, we will determine a fair pro-rata rate per round played (depending on course).
Team USA provided incredible hospitality to Team GB in 2024, and so as hosts in 2026, we would like to reciprocate that hospitality whilst they are in Liverpool. Therefore, in addition to golf fees, we would like to request that a donation is made to a hospitality fund that we will use to look after them. Please speak to Robbie Kayll, Neill Brannelly or Brian Wainwright directly for more information about this.
The venues have required deposits in order to secure tee times, which have been paid by the UK organiser at personal expense. Therefore, we would request a deposit of £200 be paid after registration if you wish to be considered for selection in order to help cover those course deposits and towards the hospitality fund. Deposits are non-refundable except in the case where we are over subscribed and you are not selected to play in a match. If you are unable to pay the deposit, then please contact Brian Wainwright, Robbie Kayll or Neill Brannelly directly.
